Last month Manhattan Murder Mystery held the Monday night residency slot at The Satellite, a fitting bookend to what ended up being a banner year for the band (which included the release of full-length self-titled album and the E.P. Woman House)It's been awhile since we last featured Manhattan Murder Mystery (okay, a lot longer than awhile), but we'll try to make up for that right now.

This show was a good cap to end their December run at The Satellite, performing selections from the aforementioned Woman House E.P. to the always crowd-pleasing "Parking Lot" Good times all around.

The Henry Clay People NYE Extravanganza 12/31/11 - The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA.

To say that the 3rd annual Henry Clay People NYE concert (after an absence last year) at The Satellite/ex-Spaceland was an extravaganza might be considered an understatement, especially to those of us who were there. It was quite a show for old and new fans of the band (for this reporter it was their second, after seeing them at the Hammer Museum last July), which culminated in almost two hours of music almost evenly split into new material and the band's greatest hits, and the second half devoted to self-proclaimed "shitty covers" (which were quite the opposite actually)

Before the clock struck midnight, the band ripped through a collection of tunes that were mostly new (a standout was the newbie "Every Band We Ever Loved Is Selling Out and Breaking Up" - a mischievous commentary on some of the happenings in the music world over the past year?), with songs from previous albums sprinkled in. It seemed like all bets were off after ringing in the new though, when the cover set commenced - as noted bellow, the selection ran the gamut from The Beatle's I Saw Her Standing There" to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" to Prince's "When Doves Cry" - quite a selection indeed. Many of the guests that came onstage during the included Manhattan Murder Mystery's Matthew Teardrop (who sang on a couple of songs that included Dead Kennedy's "California Uber Alles") and a surreal cameo from The Undertone's Paul McLoone on his band's hit "Teenage Kicks" (sadly, Johnny Rotten was not in the house to assist on the Sex Pistol's "Holiday in the Sun")

Reflecting on 2011: Year in Review

So, as many of you are aware and are still following this blog, this year's "year in review" will be a bit truncated due to my life "off-line" getting quite busy this past few months. However, there were some notable highlights from this past year, and hopefully there will be more to come in 2012.

Back in January, we were fortunate to attend The Monolators residency at the now-departed LaBrie's lounge in Glendale, recording nights one, two, and four. It ended up being a memorable series of shows.

In February, we caught an interesting Sara Lov show at the Bootleg Theatre that served as a release party for her latest release I Already Love You, a album of covers. Also that month, we put up the second half of C-Horse's residency at Casey's Irish Bar - a band who was a new discovery for Recording L.A.

May brought us our great presentation of the third night of the Seasons residency at Casey's Irish Bar. (with Odd Modern) This month also saw the return of Agent Ribbons to Los Angeles, with tour stops at Bardot and Origami Vinyl, playing very good back-to-back shows. (rumor has it they will be returning to our fair city next spring, so keep your eyes peeled for that)

In June, we caught the second night of C-Horse's residency at the Redwood Bar & Grill, which featured a strong line-up that included Ema and Her Lady Parts(full band effort from Ema and Her Ghosts) and The Damselles and the TC4. June also brought us the intense and memorable tribute to the The Movies, which featured several area bands and musicians paying tribute to the now-disbanded band in the form of covers of their most well-known songs.

Finally, in July we caught The Henry Clay People (which was a long time in the making) at the closing night of the Hammer Museum's yearly "Also I Like To Rock" series. Tomorrow night, they hold their semi-annual (after skipping last year) NYE show at The Satellite, and it promises to be a fun time.

And that's all for now, folks. Stay tuned for next year, where I will try to post more often, pending other obligations. First order of business though, is a Facebook page, which has been long overdue on my end.

Blog update.

Hello all.

I apologize for the lack of updates in the past few months (!) - apparently, "real life" has keep me busier than I thought it would as of late. Therefore, I haven't been able to set aside enough spare time to contribute to the blog in any meaningful way. So, assuming anyone is still following/reading...

I have received a few upload requests - if anyone still wants those, or wishes to make new ones, send them to me. However, I probably will not be able to fulfill them until sometime around the middle of next month, so you would have to be patient.

What does this mean for the future of the blog? I'm not sure - I don't want to say this is the end and quit posting for good (I would never completely shut it down, but would only continue to perform maintenance as needed); however, I can't say for certain I will be able to continue to post on a regular basis, if at all.

Thanks for listening. I'll try to keep everyone posted.

The Happy Hollows 8/18/11 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA.

About a week-and-a-half ago, The Happy Hollows played their first full length show in what seems like awhile (not counting the Sarah and Charlie duo mini-set at The Movies tribute show in June) at The Echo in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. It's been quite awhile also for us since we last covered The Happy Hollows (last year at the Hammer Museum, along with a few other times)This show was notable for a couple of reasons - it was the debut of their new drummer Richy (since Chris exited the band awhile back), and the unveiling of new material in the form of several songs incorporated with older ones.

The Henry Clay People 7/28/11 - Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA.

Last month, The Henry Clay People (no affiliation with the 19th century politician who was a member of the Whig party) helped close out this year's "Also I Like To Rock" summer series at the Hammer Museum in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles (doors down from the famed UCLA campus) What may come as a surprise to many denizens of the Los Angeles music scene, is that the author of this post has never seen The Henry Clay People in person. Sure, I had heard and read about them, heard their recorded material, heard it covered by other bands - but never quite had an opportunity to catch a show of theirs until recently. The Henry Clay People have been a staple on the local scene for quite some time, earning many accolades and followers.

This evening's show was a spirited gathering, with a set comprised of some old favorites and the preview of some new material. A clever tease of "Freebird" was performed by their keyboardist Jordan. Fun show and a good introduction to those unfamiliar with the band.

Note: Several new songs were played at this show, but as the writing of this post, I have not received any titles to identify them.

A few weeks ago (yes, I know, it's been awhile since the last post here - blame it on a combination of being sick/procrastination) "Tribute to The Movies" took place at The Satellite in Los Angeles. Several bands and artists came together to pay tribute to the now-defunct Los Angeles-based band The Movies. While our experiences with The Movies have been limited (we saw frontman Timothy James do a solo set over two years ago) they have been described as "legendary in Los Angeles" and "entirely idealized—purported to be larger than life." Regardless, it was a very emotional evening.

Due to the, er, boisterous nature of this event, this was a challenging show to record. Each band/artist was recorded and mastered separately (with fade ins and outs applied between each "set") - thus, sound levels will vary. The beginning of "Truth Knocking" was cut due to one of the night's performers who shall remain nameless whispering in my left ear. Approximately 14 seconds of "Get Your Macho Out" was cut due an audience member telling me, and I quote "The majority of those musicians on stage are completely unprofessional - why aren't you up there with them?" (yes, this really happened)

Several years ago, Gemma Hayes performed a solo acoustic show at the now-departed Tangier's (lounge and restaurant) in the Los Feliz (Hollywood-adjunct) area of Los Angeles. I've a been a fan of Ms. Hayes for quite some time, but this is first instance of her being featured here. This show could be considered representative of her "Los Angeles-period" when she was recording and living here. I do understand that she recently released a new album ("Let It Break") - however, I have not heard anything off it, so I can't really comment on it.

I first heard of her back in 2003, when her first full-length album "Night On My Side" was released in the United States, through either a review in Bust Magazine or on KCRW, don't exactly remember. Soon-after, I happened to catch an headlining show of her's at the Troubadour, which ended up being a almost sold-out affair. She didn't really perform much in Los Angeles after that, until 2005 when she had an (rather under-publicized, which was speculated to have been on purpose) April residency at Tangier's, followed by this show the next month. After releasing her second album "The Roads Don't Love You" later that year, she occasionally did more shows in the L.A.-area, mostly at The Hotel Cafe, testing out material that would end up on her third album "The Hollow Of Morning." She eventually left Los Angeles to move back to her native Ireland, and hasn't really performed here since.

Again, this show was pretty representative of what she was performing at the time - starting off with a couple of songs from "Night On My Side." A cover of John Martyn's "Head and Heart" was featured, and half the setlist was material that ended up on "The Roads Don't Love You." An interesting peak into the past of Gemma Haye's musical career, and fans of her's should definitely check this show out.

Last Tuesday, with support from Ema and Her Lady Parts and The Damselles & The TC4, C-horse played the second night of their June Tuesday night residency at The Redwood Bar & Grill in downtown Los Angeles. The reader may recall that we posted a couple of their performances from their last residency at Casey's Irish Pub in February. We were happy to find out they were doing another residency so soon after the last one (and with such good line-ups too)

Tonight's set was a spirited and fun one, with lots of familiar songs. Definite highlights were "Know Me," and the newer (?) "2 or 3." Quite a good show, and it's highly recommended that you make it out to the two remaining performances this month if you can.

Last Tuesday, The Damselles & The TC4 (along with Ema and Her Lady Parts) opened for the second night of C-horse's Tuesday night June residency at The Redwood Bar & Grill in downtown Los Angeles. It has been quite awhile since we last saw the The Damselles & The TC4 (okay, over a year as a matter of fact). In the interim,they have released their first self-titled E.P./"official recording." (which can be heard and purchased here)

As evidenced by this evening's setlist, they seem to have shifted away from playing mostly covers in favor of branching out to their own original, du-wop/sixties girl-group-influenced material - a highlight was set opener "More Than Just Friends." Most of the songs on the E.P. were performed as well, but covers were not forgotten - The Crystal's controversial "He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)" and The Five Du-Tone's "Shake A Tail Feather" (also notably covered by Ray Charles and Tina Turner, respectively) Very fun show (and partial dance party!) and of course well worth the download.

Ema and Her Lady Parts 6/14/11 - The Redwood Bar & Grill, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Tuesday, Ema and Her Lady Parts opened for the second night of C-horse's Tuesday night June residency at the pirate-themed The Redwood Bar & Grill in downtown Los Angeles. Ema and Her Lady Parts is the full-band effort of Ema Tunermann, also known (when performing solo) as Ema and the Ghosts. The band itself could be called a supergroup of some of L.A.'s best on the local scene, including Mary Chartkoff (from , etc.) on drums, Lindsay Mancha (C-horse, Shirley Rolls) on bass, and Pauline Lay (of pehrspace fame) on violin.

Some of the songs may sound familiar, as they were performed by "Ema and the Ghosts." Of note is the Phil Spector-penned cover "To Know Him Is To Love Him". The band has been recording as of late with Luke Ehret of Boxviolet at the helm, so hopefully we will hear the results of that collaboration sometime in the near future. In the meantime, enjoy this show.

Agent Ribbons 5/26/11 - Origami Vinyl, Los Angeles, CA.

Last week, Agent Ribbons played the second Los Angeles-area stop of their current West Coast tour (the first being a few days prior at Bardot) at the Echo Park record boutique destination Origami Vinyl. It was quite an interesting show, if only for the mere fact that bands playing here perform from the shop's second floor "loft," while the audience looks up while situated on the first "floor." (guitarist-vocalist Natalie remarked that drummer Lauren was afraid of heights, and would remain behind her drum kit for the duration of the show, which she did) As we have said before, this is one of many posts we have done on Agent Ribbons, which can be found here, here, here, here, and here.

This evening's setlist was markedly different from the show at Bardot, and included a healthy mix of songs from their two full-length albums, the older "On Time Travel and Romance" and the newer "Chateau Crone." Also of interest was the opener "Shoe Shine Boy" (if I remember correctly, an earlier version of this was performed at their Bootleg Theater show last December) A great way to conclude their run of shows in California for this tour, and we look forward to seeing them the next time they come through town.

Odd Modern 5/20/11 - Casey's Irish Bar, Los Angeles, CA.

About a week and a half ago, Odd Modern shared the bill with Seasons at a show we presented at Casey's Irish Bar in downtown Los Angeles. This was our first time seeing Odd Modern, although we saw vocalist/keyboardist Vanina Alfaro sit in with BoxViolet at a show of theirs last November. Odd Modern have been described as an "indie-electro band whose infectious beats and inspired lyrics, hidden behind the duo’s unassuming nature, catches many off guard and straddles the line between the electronic and the organic."

Most of tonight's setlist came from their full-length album "Contrary to Popular Belief", with a couple of selections from "The P.E. EP" and "Odd Mode EP." (all available to download at their website) It was a really fun show, and we look forward to what they bring in the future.

Agent Ribbons 5/22/11 - Bardot, Hollywood, CA.

On Sunday night, Agent Ribbons performed at Bardot along with The Good Listeners and Dead Sara. An interesting and unusual venue choice for Agent Ribbons (that unfortunately ended up not working out that well), but the scenery was lovely and the perfect backdrop for their music. Of course, we are no strangers to Agent Ribbons, having made many posts about them before.

As was stated during the show, this was a tour supporting their recent release "Chateau Crone," and half the setlist reflected that (which seemed to have gotten cut a bit short) While nothing new was played, the performances of the songs themselves were quite spirited, especially "I'm Alright" and "Wood, Lead, Rubber" - plus, "The World Is a Cigarette" and "The Boy With the Wooden Lips" made nice bookends to open the set. Fun show, and we are looking forward to the next one.

Seasons 5/20/11 - Casey's Irish Pub, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Friday, we presented the third night of Season's May residency at Casey's Irish Bar in downtown Los Angeles. It was our first time presenting a show, and we would like to thank Seasons for asking us to do so. That being said, we have featured Seasons here before.

This was a notable show because the setlist focused mainly on "older songs," such as "Empty Spaceships" and "Song That You Know" from the "Spring" EP, and "Real Dreams" from the "Summer" EP, along with "Passing Trains" from an older self-titled album. This show also happened to be the first one we saw with their new violinist as well. Really fun show, and again, we are thankful for the opportunity to present.

The Hectors 4/05/11 - LaBrie's, Glendale, CA.

Earlier this month, The Hectors shared the bill with The Lonely Wild and Radars To The Sky for the former's Radio Free Silverlake Tuesday night residency this month. We have seen The Hectors before (at last year's "Undercovered" show), but this will be the first time we have made a post about them. Their music has been described as "smart, edgy pop" with "a sense of humor to go along with their pop chops, which is only natural when you consider the L.A. quartet has influences ranging from the syrupy to Fugazi."

Tonight's setlist was mostly new songs, including "Your Favorite Year" (read the story behind the song here)and has been described as "swing[ing] in orbit around more than just a few of the band’s favorite years, spinning as it does from the lovely gauze-pop of late-’80s 4AD to the meticulously ‘gazed Creation Records crunch of the early ’90s to the sprightly indie rock and pop of the last decade–essentially, a three-and-a-half minute love letter to some of dream pop’s best and more ear-pleasing elements." Whew. Fun show, and we are definitely looking forward to their upcoming full-length album.

Last week, The Lonely Wild kicked off their month-long April "Radio Free Silverlake presents" Tuesday night residency at LaBrie's in Glendale. (you might remember that we previously posted the Radars To The Sky set from the same show a few days ago) This was the first time we've seen The Lonely Wild live, and it was certainly an interesting treat. The Lonely Wild is a relatively new band that has gotten quite a bit of positive press, ranging from having "expansive indie country songs have breathtakingly beautiful male-female harmonies that contrast with instrumentation that recalls desolate Morricone spaghetti western twang, then blooms into lush country soul orchestrations" and "impeccably sung, confusingly catchy, stirring, hypnotic American music."

Nowhere was their type of nouveau folk stylings evident than in tonight's setlist, of course. A few of songs were taken from their recently-released album Dead End. A clever cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" was prominently featured as well. Great show, and we look forward to seeing them again in the future.

On Tuesday night, Radars to the Sky helped kick off The Lonely Wild's April "Radio Free Silverlake presents" Tuesday night residency at LaBrie's in Glendale. It's been quite awhile since we have seen Radars to the Sky, so this was an exciting opportunity to see them again. This was a great show, full of fun highlights.

The set started with two songs from their first release, 2007's simply-titled EP. The rest of the set was for the most part (except for the "new song") composed of selections off of their debut LP that was released last year, Supra/Infra (which includes a cover of The Walkmen's "The Rat"). A couple of standouts included "Matt, You Hit Too Close to the Bone" (you can read an interesting back-story behind this song here)and the yet-to-be-titled new song, which was mostly sung by key-player/vocalist Kate Spitser in French.

Warpaint 6/19/10 - Make Music Pasadena, Pasadena, CA.

Last June, Warpaint was part of the annual Make Music Festival in Pasadena, a festival that has stages of music scattered across the city. 2010 was quite a banner year for Warpaint - besides releasing their first full-length album The Fool, toured extensively, and rouse to further prominence and acclaim. It's been awhile since we have featured Warpaint (August 2009 and March 2010 at the venue formerly known as Spaceland), but it took us awhile to get this show in.

Half of the setlist was dedicated to The Fool, while the rest was from their 2009 EP Exquisite Corpse Consequence Of Sound had a good review of their set, saying that "Warpaint is captivating in a weird way. The music is groovy and melodic, with vocals that even seem haunting, and the band feels their music in a way that is rare. I think I was surprised at how rare it is, that a rock band felt compelled to move and interact consistently with each other, definitely not having reached the phoned-in stage." Enjoy this fun set.

I saw The Growlers at another festival a few months later and now I regret not seeing all of Warpaint then getting something to eat."

C-horse 2/25/11 - Casey's Irish Bar, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Friday, C-horse played the final night of their February Friday night residency at Casey's Irish Pub in downtown Los Angeles. A rainy night did not keep the crowds away, and C-horse did not disappoint - they closed out a month of shows with a bang. You may have remembered that we just blogged about C-horse last week - which was quite a good show as well.

Being that this was the last residency night, we were treated to a guest appearance by The Damselles on the final number (coincidentally enough, we recorded them at the very same venue a little over a year ago before the date of this show), which was a cover of OutKast's infamous "Hey Ya!" One of two great covers, the other was Nirvana's "Pennyroyal Tea" Good show, and we look forward to seeing what C-horse has in store for the future.

C-horse 2/18/11 - Casey's Irish Pub, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Friday, C-horse performed at Casey's Irish Pub in downtown Los Angeles. This was the third night of their month-long Friday night residency at the aforementioned venue. While this is our first time featuring C-horse here, we have done a couple of posts on The Karabal Nightlife, a now-departed band that C-horse members Lindsay Mancha and Courtney Olsen were once a part of. Described as "creat[ing] three-minute slices of candy-coated edginess, more prickly live than on their debut album," their music is also described as "laced with intricate vocal harmonies and packed with a powerful pop sensibility." Closing out with a cover of The Buzzcock's "Everybody's Happy Nowadays," it was a pretty good sounding show.

Sara Lov 2/12/11 - Bootleg Theater, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Saturday, Sara Lov held a pre-Valentine's Day show/release party for her new covers album I Already Love You at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles. Held in the actual "theater" part of the venue (most concerts are in the front area), the elevated seating and flat stage gave the performance a sort of Sessions at West 54th sort of feel, and also featured cupcakes and handmade wooden Valentine's (given away with cd/t-shirt purchase) We of course are no strangers to Sara Lov, having featured an older acoustic performance, a full-band outing at the Hotel Cafe, and last year's show at the El Rey Theatre.

The setlist for tonight's show was cleverly split in two - the first half concentrated on covers and the second on Ms. Lov's own material (from her debut LP Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming)The covers were an interesting selection, running the gamut from Evanescence's "Sally Song"* (which is not on the aforementioned cover's album, yet played as a tribute to a friend) to The Magnetic Field's "Papa Was A Rodeo" to Ron Sexsmith's "Just My Heart Talkin'" to The Smith's "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" (which was previewed at her El Rey show last year) to the 1980's classic Thompson Twins anthem "Hold Me Now." This was a wonderful show, and came out pretty good - a must have for all Sara Lov fans.

*technically it's called Sally's Song, but since it was Sally Song on the setlist, I'm going with that.

The Monolators 1/25/11 - LaBrie's, Glendale, CA.

Last month, The Monolators concluded their month-long Tuesday night residency at LaBrie's in Glendale. And what a night it was, capping off with an extra-long (okay, it's the longest set we've seen them do, lol) epic set. It was a fitting finale to a month of excellent performances (sorry about night three, their were some technical difficulties on my end) that promised pretzels and "no setlist repeats" (the latter which ended up being broken as you will see, ha ha)

Tonight's setlist focus on The Monolator's latter catalog, specifically their last full-length LP Don't Dance and their latest release/double EP Silver Cities/Ruby I'm Changing My Number. The first encore was a cover from their Kickstarter series, KISS's "God Of Thunder." Due to audience demand, a second encore was played, and broke their "no repeats" streak - "Let's Be Best Friends In Space" (performed at the 1/11 show) This show was a amazing end to their residency, and we hope to see them again soon.

Jesca Hoop 1/12/11 - The Hotel Cafe, Hollywood CA.

Last week, Jesca Hoop made a now-rare appearance at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Before moving to Manchester (U.K.), it used to be possible to see her on a fairly regular basis at places such as the Hotel Cafe - now, while they are less frequent, that only serves to make them more special. Granted, it's been awhile since we have posted about Ms. Hoop on here (we covered her entire "farewell" April 2009 residency at the same venue), so it was a bit of a momentous occasion.

Backed by a full band, the setlist leaned heavily towards her second LP Hunting My Dress (released last year in the U.S.), with a couple of songs from the first one Kismet. The audience was also treated to a preview of some new material - two songs ("The House That Jack Built" and "Born To") were performed for the first time ever; although, it's not clear whether the latter song is meant to be a homage (or have a connection to) the similarly-named Mother Goose rhyme "This Is the House Jack Built." Additionally, we also heard a newer song "Food At Your House," with Ms. Hoop's long-time friends and collaborators The Ditty Bops.

For all Jesca Hoop fans, this show is a must-have.

The Monolators 1/11/11 - LaBrie's, Glendale, CA.

Last week, The Monolators continued with their month-long Tuesday "pretzel and no-repeated songs" residency (presented by Radio Free Silverlake) at LaBrie's in Glendale. Like the first night, the second one continued to live up to it's promise - many pretzels were consumed (even pretzel cookies!) and we were treated to a completely different set of material spanning The Monolator's vast catalog.

The setlist was another mix of the old and the new - from one of their oldest "Santy Anno" (unreleased) to their newest "Ruby, I'm Changing My Number" (off the recently-released "Silver Cities/Ruby, I'm Changing My Number" Double EP) The song "Your Mother's Lover Eating Cake," which was featured in online preview for this show, has an interesting backstory that can be read about here. Due to audience demand for an encore, they pulled out their cover of Golden Smog's "Pecan Pie" - which happened to be one of the cover songs done for those who contributed a certain amount of money to The Monolator's recent Kickstarter project. The Monolators 1/04/11 - LaBrie's, Glendale, CA.

Last week, the previously-much-covered-on-this-blog band The Monolators kicked off their month-long Tuesday "pretzel" residency (presented by Radio Free Silverlake) at LaBrie's in Glendale. Besides the promise of pretzels, this is also a very special residency because the band has promised to "play completely different sets for all four weeks of the residency, different songs every night" (a.k.a no repeats) On a side note, it was the first time we've been to LaBrie's since it was called "The Scene" - we went to see a certain singer-songwriter that now composes music for a certain Wednesday night sitcom on ABC.

The setlist for this show was an interesting one - a few of the songs ("Spandex Hitman" "Take It Outside" and "In My Dreams" - more info about this song here) were some of their earliest from their extensive catalog. The rest of the songs served as a partial "best of," with "Rejection Set Me Free" featuring ex-member Tom Bogon. Fun show and we are looking forward to seeing what the rest of the month brings from them.

White Arrows 12/29/10 - The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA.

Last month, White Arrows (along with SISU) opened for Giant Drag at The Satellite in Los Angeles. 2010 was very kind to the White Arrows, who landed a Monday residency in August at the venue formerly known as Spaceland after "playing one-offs at the aforementioned, relatively diminutive venue." (LaBrie's was the venue) Their music has been described as "uptempo power pop [and] psychedelic rock," and "indie pop meets electro meets rock meets major hip shaking." Most of their setlist consisted of songs from their self-titled EP, which is currently a free download, along with a cover of Bruce Springteen's "I'm On Fire."

They are also trying to raise money for a music video via Kickstarter, so check it out and try to help them if you can, thanks.

Last week, SISU opened for Giant Drag at The Satellite (formerly known as Spaceland) in Los Angeles. SISU is "a quartet featuring Sandra Vu and Ryan Wood from the (currently idle) band Midnight Movies...which deals in ethereal, experimental soundscapes." (Ms. Vu is also a member of Dum Dum Girls) They have a couple of releases: Demon Tapes (EP - available as a free download) and Sharp Teeth (Single - available on vinyl or digitally) Good show, and we are curious to see what they may be up to next.

Giant Drag 12/29/10 - The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA.

Last week, Giant Drag helped close out 2010 by headlining The Satellite (formerly Spaceland) in Los Angeles. Shows by Giant Drag have been few and far between in recent years, so this was a welcome opportunity to see them. We are no strangers to Giant Drag, having done a "mega"-post on them back in May 2009.

The setlist included a nice mix of the old and new from their debut LP Hearts and Unicorns and last year's (long-delayed release) Swan Song EP It's interesting to note that 2009's "Don't Come Around" has morphed into "Won't Come Around," and presumably will be on their next album (along with new song "Garbage Hearts") Good show from Giant Drag, and we hope to see more from them in 2011.

Recording LA's Best of 2010

I didn't do this last year, but since it seems to be all the rage to do year-end best of/"top" (insert number here) lists, it made sense to try to do one. Since this was a bit of a lean year for Recording LA, this list is more of a "best of" the year, vs. a top 10+ list.

1.) Castledoor 2/22/10 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA. Admittedly, I jumped on the Castledoor bandwagon very, very late - just before this show as a matter of fact. It was a very strong, yet melancholy performance, pretty much due to the fact it was their last as a band. Obviously a must listen due to the circumstances of this show.

2.) The Happy Hollows 7/08/10 - Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA. Had seen The Happy Hollows for quite some time before this show, and combined with the venue (Hammer Museum courtyard) and the energy of the crowd, this show made for a pretty powerful performance.

3.) The Monolators 7/19/10 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA. While they were missing a band member, this particular Monolators show packed a very unique punch - it seemed to flow together just perfectly.

4.) 12th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival 10/02/10 - (in and around Colorado Blvd.) Los Angeles, CA. (Seasons, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Radars To The Sky, The Submarines, Walking Sleep)This year's line-up for the Eagle Rock Music Festival was a particularly well-curated one, especially on the Kingsize and Ship stages. All the bands turned in great performances as well.

5.) Belle and Sebastian 10/05/10 - Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Hollywood, CA. Perhaps it's a bit biased to say that by default any Belle and Sebastian show would be on a year-end "best of" list, but this was one amazing show. Combining a "setlist that was any fan's dream" in an intimate and unique venue creates one incredible show.

6.) Agent Ribbons 3/09/10 - Puka Bar, Long Beach, CA. and 12/20/10 - Bootleg Theater, Los Angeles, CA. Agent Ribbons also put on some of the best shows we've seen this year as well (they are one of our favorite bands of late) and back-to-back make for a couple of good performances.

Agent Ribbons 3/5/07 - Biko Garage, Isla Vista, CA.

Awhile back, Agent Ribbons played a show at Biko Garage in Isle Vista (outside of Santa Barbara)with a few other bands. We didn't actually have anything to do with recording this show - I just found it awhile back on the community audio part of the Internet Archive. Naturally, since we have posted quite a bit about Agent Ribbons (and as recently as last week, ha ha), I thought this would be good to highlight here.

This is an interesting show for a number of reasons - one being, it appears to be the only one that exists that is more than a couple of years old. Two, while it mostly features material from their first LP On Time Travel and Romance, a few rare/unreleased songs were performed. A great blast from the past, and an essential listen for any Agent Ribbons fan.

Last month, The Californian headlined the first Tuesday night residency (presented by Radiofree Silverlake) at LaBrie's in Glendale. The Californian is a band that consists of musicians that play in many other well-regarded area bands, including The Sweet Hurt, The Bird and the Bee, The Henry Clay People, and I Make This Sound. Earlier this year they released an EP Sea Of Love , and are currently recording their first full-length album.

Here, we are highlighting one of the shows from this residency. Their music has been self-described as being one of "a modern day surf band...[a type of]surf music that had the ability to be influenced by The Beatles, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Bjork, Joy Division, Nirvana, Elliott Smith, Andrew Bird, Beck, David Bowie." A very fun show, and we look forward to seeing more of The Californian in the future.

Agent Ribbons 12/20/10 - Bootleg Theater, Los Angeles, CA.

On Monday evening, Agent Ribbons headlined in the midnight slot at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles - which happened to be the only Southern California stop on their current tour in this fine state. This was interesting show because for one, this is the first time we've seen them since they released their second full-length album Chateau Crone, and also the first show since they started playing as a two-piece again (violinist Naomi left the band in October). We of course have proved to be big fans of Agent Ribbons in past, having posted shows of theirs in the past.

The setlist for this show contained many familiar songs from both of their full-length albums. A couple of interesting surprises were hearing "Bird In The Mirror" live for the first time (off of the 2009 EP Your Love Is The Smallest Doll)and the new "Dirty Pattycake Song"(best guess at the title for now) Also of note in connection to this show was guitarist/vocalist Natalie's guitar having been stolen in San Francisco at another show a few days prior to this one, which she discussed during the performance. This was a fun show as usual, and we look forward to seeing them again in the future.

Earlier this month, BoxViolet performed a show at Pehrspace as part of the line-up for The Monolators Silver Cities double EP release party. BoxViolet was celebrating a new release of their own as well, the EP Audition; plus, they gave that night's audience the opportunity to see them play as a four-piece band with the addition of Vanina Alfaro (Odd Modern) on keys and Sean Johnson (Shirley Rolls/The Damselles & The TC4) on drums. It's been quite awhile since we posted a BoxViolet show (okay, well, over a year actually); however, hopefully you will agree that it was worth the wait.

As it has been stated elsewhere, BoxViolet "played a nice, lengthy set" that mostly included material from the new EP, along with the pleasant surprise of "We Fell Dead" (Monolators cover) which they did a "redux" of on last year's We Fell Dead remix EP. They played to a pretty packed room, so you may hear some chatter in the background. Fun show, and we hope to see them again soon.

The weekend before last, The Monolators celebrated their latest release Silver Cities/Ruby, I'm Changing My Number (double EP) at Pehrspace. This was quite an event, featuring a line-up that included BoxViolet (who were also celebrating a new release of their own, the EP Audition), Hot TV, and The Tleilaxu Music Machine. We have covered The Monolators at great length in the past, most of which can be found in the last show we posted of theirs.

Tonight's setlist mostly consisted of the entire aforementioned double EP being played in it's entirety (mostly switching back and forth between tracks from both "albums"), along with the quasi-encore of the older song "Let's Be Best Friends In Space" from Our Tears Have Wings. A interesting personal highlight for me though, was when Eli came up to and sang to us during "Anxiety" (I think this was the song) - it's okay though Eli, you didn't know (was just taken by surprise is all) All in all, a very fun show (pardon some of the crowd noise)

Last month, Walking Sleep played at this year's 12th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival (along with previously-posted Seasons, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Radars To The Sky, and The Submarines)We have had the pleasure of seeing Walking Sleep perform before under their old moniker The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra - however, these were all-cover sets (at last year's Undercovered extravaganza, and performing as "Fleetwood Mac" last Halloween at The Echo) This time, though, we got a short but sweet look at them playing their own original material. (their song "Don't Be Fooled" was recently featured on Grey's Anatomy as well)

As noted, Walking Sleep was originally known as The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, and they are described as "combined male and female vocal harmonies, classic rhythms, and curiously dark lyrics...drawing influence across genres and decades, their songs include echoes of the melancholy psychedelic pop of The Zombies, the uptempo stomp of classic Motown, and the moody melodicism of Fleetwood Mac, but placed in a modern context, akin to bands like Belle & Sebastian and The Shins." This set of songs lived up to that, which was mainly culled from their recent debut LP release Measures, along with a newer one. A fun little show worth downloading.

Part 4 in a series.

Resuming our series on this year's Eagle Rock Music Festival, earlier this month The Submarines played at said event (along with the previously-posted Seasons, Manhattan Murder Mystery, and Radars to the Sky) I've been listening to The Submarines for awhile, since they released their first album, and we saw them at last year's Sunset Junction - but this is the first time we've been able to get a listenable live recording of them. Their brand of bouncy, indie pop rock has gained quite a following - songs of theirs have been featured on the television shows Weeds, Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl; in commercials for the Apple iPhone; and in the film Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Their set at this festival was a mini-compilation showcasing the highlights from their two full-length albums Declare A New State! and Honeysuckle Weeks, along with an untitled new song. The Submarines seemed to be one of the biggest draws of the night at The Kingsize/Ship stages, judging from the extremely-enthusiastic crowd. I would like to note though, that the sound quality of this recording is a bit on the average side - due to proximity, crowd, muddiness, and low vocals at times. However, since live recordings of The Submarines seem pretty rare, it's worth a download anyway.

Belle and Sebastian 10/05/10 - Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Hollywood ,CA.

Last week, Belle and Sebastian played at Hollywood Forever Cemetery to a sold-out crowd of approximately 2500 people (rough estimate) and at least one goose (yes, there was a very calm yet sociable goose in the audience - and no, I'm still not sure if it lives there or someone smuggled it in) who braved the cold weather and possibility of showers (it ended up not raining, thank goodness - though, during the performance frontman Stuart Murdoch expressed his concern that the audience might be cold) Granted, it might seem odd to see a concert; however, for those unfamiliar, Hollywood Forever is no ordinary cemetery - many famous and/or wealthy persons are buried there, and people often come to tour and picnic among the many ornate grave monuments. The cemetery also hosts many cultural events, other concerts, and film screenings (prior to Belle and Sebastian taking the stage, the film Trainspotting was screened onto one of the buildings next to the stage - an appropriate selection)

I first started listening to Belle and Sebastian when someone recommending getting their recently-released Books E.P. The infectious melodies grabbed me, but it wasn't until the next year when they were touring that I decided to seek out more of their music. While their two local stops at the Wiltern were sold out, it turned out they had added an in-store at the L.A. outpost of Amoeba Music, so I went to that instead - and it was at this particular show where Mr. Murdoch looked upon the at-capacity crowd and asked "Don't any of you people have to work?" (the show took place in the afternoon in the middle of the week) Oh Stuart, if you only knew.

Later that summer, I was fortunate enough to attend their biggest performance yet, at the Hollywood Bowl backed up by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It was amazing of course, the combined forces of the venue, the band, and the Philharmonic, making for an incredible and memorable evening. Little did I know at the time, it would be quite awhile before we saw them again - until now.

The setlist for this show, which in some quarters has been described as "a fan's dream" and "spanned the length of their catalog." As speculated, and also appropriately enough, they opened with "Sukie in the Graveyard," and closed with "Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying." Oddly enough (or perhaps not), only a very few songs from their about-to-be-released (though, it will be by the time most of you read this) new album Write About Love. We would have liked to have heard "Step Into My Office, Baby" like those got to hear at the Hollywood Palladium two nights before, or perhaps "Ease Your Feet In The Sea" (which would have been a stretch actually), but it's okay - the show was great anyway, and turned out pretty well (there might be a touch of crowd noise here and there)

Last Saturday, Radars to the Sky (along with previously-posted Seasons and Manhattan Murder Mystery) played as part of the line-up for this year's 12th annual Eagle Rock Music Festival. We are familiar with the band, having posted their set from last year's "Undercovered" show (and catching a couple of their performances around town in the past) - this is the first time we gotten a set with them playing their own material. Radars to the Sky are a band that "play a gritty brand of power-pop as fuzzy as it is catchy...balancing out lead singer Andrew Spitser's impassioned efforts is the sweeter sound of his wife Kate, whose cooing vocals give a much-needed cool-down to the band's heated sound."

This short set featured songs from their recently-released (and first) full length album Supra/Infra, along with a couple from their two older E.P.'s Big Bang and Debut. An excellent little set that left us wanting more. On that note however, Radars to the Sky do have the Monday night residency at Spaceland this month (as of this writing, remaining dates are the 11th, 18th, and 25th) - so, if you reside in the Los Angeles or surrounding area, I highly recommend checking them out.

Manhattan Murder Mystery 10/02/10 - 12th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival (The Ship Stage), Los Angeles, CA.

Last Saturday (along with the previously-posted Seasons), Manhattan Murder Mystery played as part of this year's line-up at the 12th annual Eagle Rock Music Festival. We aren't exactly strangers to the music of Manhattan Murder Mystery (having heard a couple of their songs covered at previous "Undercovered" shows) or their front-man Matthew Teardrop (who was part of the band collaboration "When Captain Geech Met Teardrop" at last year's incarnation of this festival) - however, this is the first time we gotten a recording of one of their performances. Manhattan Murder Mystery has been a fixture on the Silverlake/Echo Park/Highland Park music scene for quite some time, with other writers saying that "every Manhattan Murder Mystery show is like a battle royal...A wonderful, scummy battle royal" (Radio Free Silverlake), "This band can really rock the hell out of a venue, but the songwriting is strong and creative and never takes second place." (Feed Your Head), and "[they] rile up crowds with an intense combination of fast, tinny drums, banjos, bongos and power-chord pop anthems that respectfully regurgitate the Pixies and the Cult [and]craft an onstage intensity through the course of their live show that’s undeniably solid, not to mention totally infectious, rowdy and engaging." (LA Weekly)

The set for this performance was a compilation of some of their more well-known songs such as "Parking Lot" (which included Mr. Teardrop's trademark stage diving and "running off" just before the song ended) Also featured was the song "Owen Hart," which was presented as "a hyper-angular guitar jangle and lyrics from the perspective of deceased wrestler Owen Hart." A fun show and great introduction to those who may be unfamiliar with their music.

This past Saturday afternoon, Seasons kicked off the musical festivities on the Kingsize stage at the 12th annual Eagle Rock Music Festival. Awhile back, we posted a cover set of theirs from this year's "Undercovered" show - this time, we have them performing their own material. The festival itself this year featured many great performances from a wonderfully curated list of mostly-local talent, and festival attendance peaked at approximately 70,000+ during the late afternoon/evening. The Finches 1/25/07 - Safari Sam's, Hollywood, CA.

Awhile back, The Finches opened (along with Winter Flowers) for Lavender Diamond (fronted by Becky Stark, who is currently a part of The Living Sisters) at the now-departed and often-troubled Hollywood venue Safari Sam's. This Finches show was an older duo incarnation of the band with Aaron Morgan(who's founder/main member is Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs). The Finches have undergone changes in their member line-up since then (and even briefly changed their name to PALMS), so this performance serves as an earlier example of the band.

We first heard of The Finches a few months prior in October at the 2006 Eagle Rock Music Festival. They were on the bill before perennial blog favorite Jesca Hoop (if so inclined, that performance can be downloaded here), so we happened to catch them and quite enjoyed their American folk pop-style music. Fortunately enough, we were able to catch them at this Safari Sam's show a few months later, which was also a good performance. We hope to eventually see them again in the near future.

Awhile back, Imperial Teen headlined at the now-closed location of the Knitting Factory in West Hollywood. This show was not only a rare opportunity to see Imperial Teen play live (they haven't been performing much in recent years) - it was also a chance to (at the time) see them preview new material (that all ended up on their last release, 2007's The Hair The TV The Baby & The Band. Imperial Teen, who has been described as having a "pop aesthetic of crunchy guitar riffs and classic boy/girl harmonies," has been around for quite some time and has quite a catalog of music to their credit (much of which was showcased within this performance)

I first heard of Imperial Teen back in 2002, when I saw a review of their latest release On. I made a mental note to check it out; however, it wasn't until browsing around in a box of cd's at my local Wherehouse Music going-out-of-business sale and seeing that album reminded me to take a listen to their music. So, I bought the album, promptly fell in love with their music, and sought after the rest of their music.

When this popped up, I of course had to go. It was quite an occasion - many fans of the band showed up for this "reunion" show of sorts (they hadn't played live for quite a while proceeding it) Along with the new songs, many old favorites from previous releases (including Seasick and What Is Not To Love) were performed as well. On the technical side, there may have some minor feedback present during the show, along with some echo/reverb in the room, but don't let that stop you from downloading and listening.

Nicole Kidman 8/14/10 - Pehrspace, Los Angeles, CA.

The weekend before last, Nicole Kidman played at Ema and the Ghost's birthday show, which also included Black Nile and Your Mom/Your Dad (aka The Monolators). Nicole Kidman is the moniker of Jon Barba, who has been described as a musician that "makes gritty, confessional electro-pop that sounds like he spent the last five years in his mom’s basement hunched over a keyboard, wallowing in laments of unrequited love." The 704 had a take on his music that I can concur with as well : "With his preset beats and his simple yet adept keyboard playing, he sang some of the most bluntly, nakedly confessional songs you'll ever hear, all in a high voice that sounded like it was a breath or two away from giving up and going home. From what I could tell, his songs were about exactly what they sounded like they were about--he opts for cutting truth over airy abstraction--but he'd occasionally hit on a phrase of such shattered perfection that you could only call it poetry." Like the artist said in his live performance, his "music isn't for everyone," but it's definitely worth a listen.

*The disclaimer is half-serious/half tongue-in-cheek. In today's world, one must try to keep all their bases covered.

Your Mom/Your Dad (& The Monolators) 8/14/10 - Pehrspace, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Saturday, Your Mom/Your Dad played on part of the bill (which also included Black Nile and Nicole Kidman) for Ema and the Ghost's birthday show at Pehrspace. Your Mom/Your Dad is the newest project of The Monolators, which they describe as "us with new songs, mostly written by Mary, on casiotone keyboard, drum machine, bass, and electric autoharp." It's a departure from the traditional Monolators sound, but an interesting one.

This set was a split one, with a few songs performed as Your Mom/Your Dad and a few performed as The Monolators. The later was a smattering of tunes from their back catalog, including "Eagle Fighting Zebra" (which was recently covered by Seasons) Apologies for not having the titles to most of the Your Mom/Your Dad songs (edit: thanks to Eli for supplying the names of the new songs!) - the band is relatively new, and I believe this was only their second public live show.

On a related note, The Monolators have recently announced a fundraising event for their soon-to-be released split double E.P. Silver Cities - they are trying to raise $1600 in 30 days to help fund the vinyl mastering and pressing of the said E.P. There are a few levels of what you get for your pledge (starting at $5 for MP3's of the album to $150 for "the pillow pledge") This project is being run through Kickstarter, and more info can be found here.

Last Saturday, Ema and the Ghosts headlined at Pehrspace, a gallery/performance space near downtown Los Angeles. This show was a unique one, in that it was a party celebrating Ema's 21st birthday, and had a line-up that included Black Nile (formally The Karabal Nightlife), Nicole Kidman (who was also celebrating a birthday), and Your Mom/Your Dad (new side project from The Monolators.) We haven't seen Ema and the Ghosts for quite awhile, but in the interim she has released online a couple of E.P.s - Ema and the Ghosts and Boy In The Milkbox.

The setlist included a few new(?) songs, along with older tunes such as "Alligator", "Dandelions", and "Behemoth." We also got to hear a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Memories." Overall, very good show.

George Glass 5/30/10 - All-Star Lanes, Los Angeles, CA.

Awhile back, George Glass played as part of the line-up for "Undercovered II," (more info about the show here) which featured Seasons, Rademacher, The Hectors, and One Trick Pony at All-Star Lanes. George Glass is a relatively new band, which boasts former members of other local band Death To Anders (who were part of Undercovered's debut night last year). Currently a three piece featuring Nick Celigo on vocals/guitar, Peter DiBiasio on bass, and Nathan Kondor on drums, their live shows have been described as having "fabulous vocals and guitar, real, true bass work, and terrific drumming all tied together so well" and "erupting on into the night as they deliver the goods to us once again song after song."

This set of covers was a broad one, paying note to such local luminaries (and bill-mates that night) Rademacher ("Courtesy Call") and One Trick Pony ("Loose Talk" - which was also covered by Death To Anders last year) An interesting selection was a song by Arthur Lee's band "Love," along with a cover of local's The Primos "Cookbook." However, the most impressive feat of the evening was a melody of songs by local bands (the only one I recognized was a snippet of The Happy Hollows "DeLorean"), which was a Nick solo effort.

Last week, The Franks (along with The Monolators) opened for the 3rd night of Summer Darling's Monday night residency at Spaceland. The Franks are a 3-piece punk trio based in Los Angeles who just completed a tour of the West Coast (with tonight's show being the final stop and a "homecoming" of sorts) We weren't terribly familiar with The Franks previous to this performance, but must say we were pleasantly surprised with what we heard.

A little over half of their setlist was dedicated to covering in entirety their semi-recently released E.P. Duh, with a few other previously released and newer songs. Combined with a dose of possible self-deprecating banter (the song "Call Me" was introduced as being based on a story of coming home and seeing that a person you knew left a note on your door to call them, and when you call them you discover that person is dead - it doesn't sound as bleak when you listen to it, trust me), it was an attention-grabbing show for sure. We will try to catch The Franks again in the future.

Earlier this week, The Monolators shared the bill with Summer Darling on the 3rd night of their latter's Monday night residency at Spaceland. This was a special show because they are going on hiatus and will be the last one for awhile (until they release their upcoming double EP in the fall), and a unique show because they performed as a 4-piece (because one of their band members sustained injuries in an bicycle accident) Oddly enough, this show is a milestone of sorts for this blog as well - while we have featured The Monolators acoustically, doing an all ABBA cover set, and in other collaborations (Cobra Lilies, When Captain Geech Met Teardrop), and even being covered by other bands - we have never gotten a regular full-band show of theirs, until now.

Tonight's setlist covered the gauntlet of The Monolators' catalog - one song from 2004's Rejection Set Me Free ("Summertime In My Car" - which was played as a nod to band-in-residency Summer Darling), a couple from 2006's Our Tears Have Wings, one from the 2007 EP You Look Good On The Train, one from 2008's LP Don't Dance, and a few from the previously-mentioned upcoming double EP. It was a very fun show, culminating in several audience/other band members joining them onstage as a collaborative "human glockenspiel" for "Let's Be Best Friends In Space." This performance should serve as a holdover until The Monolators return to the stage in the near future.

Earlier this month, Admiral Radley performed at this year's second installment of the KCRW and Buzz Bands-presented "Also I Like To Rock" series with bill-mates The Happy Hollows at the Hammer Museum in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Admiral Radley is a new collaboration/"supergroup" of members of two well-regarded indie bands Earlimart (Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray)and Grandaddy (Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch) This show was the precursor of the release of their debut album I Heart California and their first tour.

The setlist was mainly composed of and covered all except for one song from their album. An interesting addition was the inclusion of the track "Everytime I'm With You," (which featured guest Mr. Lytle) which was off the Danger Mouse & Sparklehouse collaboration album Dark Night Of The Soul
. All in all, an interesting show from this new collaboration.

The Happy Hollows 7/08/10 - Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Thursday, The Happy Hollows shared the bill with Admiral Radley on this month's second installment of the Buzz Bands and KCRW-presented "Also I Like To Rock" at the Hammer Museum in Westwood. A month-long series that's usually held on each Thursday of every July, it showcases some of the best indie-rock bands on the local scene. We of course are no strangers to The Happy Hollows, having posted a couple of their shows from 2008, along with an(acoustic)Sad Solids performance.

It had been awhile since I had seen The Happy Hollows live, and their set did not disappoint. A large crowd had gathered in and around (and both levels) of the courtyard, creating a huge (yet intimate) sort of party atmosphere. The set list consisted of many songs from last year's debut LP Spells, with tunes from other releases sprinkled in. A fun night in a great setting all around.

Fol Chen 7/06/10 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Tuesday, Fol Chen headlined a show that celebrated the recent release of their new LP, Part II: The New December. We had the opportunity to see them last year at the same venue; however, the recording couldn't be salvaged for publication. Tonight's show was a very different one for a couple of reasons - one, it showcased a mostly overhauled band line-up, and two, consisted of a setlist that was a combination of both their full-length albums (the first being last years release Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made)

Fol Chen has been described as having "beguiling, witty synth-pop with guitar, funky keyboards and West Coastian harmonies" (via LA Weekly) along with "in what could have been a brave experiment gone horribly wrong, the ragtag stylings, samplings, and influences of Fol Chen create a tight ensemble - not only of performers, but of song genres" (via Venus Magazine)This show backed up those claims, which provoked such observations from L.A. Times Pop & Hiss reviewer stating that "the band pull[ing] the neat trick of making its two impulses -- danceable pop immediacy and its need to run every song through a paper shredder -- feel unexpectedly simpatico" and "the...three-part harmonies were both exacting and giddy, and any wanton control-alt-deleting that happens in their studio felt organic and true onstage." Another observer at The 704 remarked that they were "effectively hypnotized from the opening drums to the blink-and-you'll-miss-it faux-encore" and "it flowed right over me without leaving a trace, the way your favorite songs always do when you hear them live...the mindbending effects and edgy harmonies painstakingly recreated." The reprises were a little puzzling as well - however, it was still all in good fun, and a worthwhile download.

Tenlons Fort 6/30/10 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA.

Last week, Tenlons Fort opened for Damien Jurado at his L.A. tour stop at Spaceland. Tenlons Fort is moniker of Jack Wilson, who has been described as a "musician, writer, director, artist and human rights activist." This was a bit of a bittersweet show, as it is going to be their last one (in Los Angeles, at least) for the foreseeable future.

Tonight's setlist was culled mostly from his recent release Shelters, which "consists of ten songs, an equal number of paintings, and a fund to raise money for homeless individuals in LA, Austin, and beyond," with "50% of record sales of Shelters LP serve[ing] as the initial donations to Tenlons Fort Shelters Fund." Past collaborator Nate Cole of Castledoor joined the band onstage on vocals for "Followed By Bad Luck." A fine performance to remember, especially since it's the last we will hear from them for awhile.

Spider 6/22/10 - Synchronicity, Los Angeles, CA.

Last week, Spider performed a short set of songs at the gallery/performance space Synchronicity. Spider is the musical moniker of Jane Herships, a singer-songwriter who is mainly based in NYC. Her music has been described as "hushed, personal folk songs with elements of shoegazing reminescent (sic) of musicians such as Nick Drake and M. Ward", with another writer adding that "it’s the way each phrase lingers in the air long enough for your ears to strain a teensy bit for the next chord or the next word to come. Languid and smooth underneath with a scratchy coating."

Tonight's list of songs was an evenly divided combination of old and newer material. In the latter half of the show, Ms. Herships was joined onstage with and accompanied by fellows bill-mates Devin, Gary and Ross. Interesting music, and worth checking out.

Seasons 5/30/10 - Undercovered II, All-Star Lanes, Los Angeles, CA.

(First and foremost, I want to apologize for my longer-than I thought hiatus/lack of posting on the blog. "Real life" got kind of busy for awhile, and show-going/posting fell by the wayside. I hope to get back on track and try to remedy that for the time being.)

Last month, Seasons were part of the line-up for Undercovered II (where Los Angeles-area bands cover other Los Angeles-area bands)at All-Star Lanes, which included Rademacher (Malcolm Sosa solo), George Glass, The Hectors, and One Trick Pony. As the reader might recall, we fully covered this event in it's inaugural outing last year, and were looking forward to this year's presentation. In addition to an expanded number of bands playing, this event also served as an benefit for Huntington's disease research.

First up to play this evening was Seasons. Much has been written about the Highland Park band, ranging from being "one of the more ubiquitous bands in the L.A. scene. Their sound is a pure product of their influences, a fusion of indie rock, 80's synth, folk rock, and garage blues -- so if you're thinking Beck, you're in the right neighborhood" to "[they are a glorious mess.The seven- or (sometimes) eight-piece makes lovingly off-kilter neo-psychedelia full of palpable energy and exposed nerves, startlingly pretty one moment and earplug-worthy cacophonous the next. When these guys nail it they are calamitously good." Their set covered a range of beloved L.A.-area bands, including previously-posted The Movies, Castledoor, and The Monolators.

Awhile back, Sarah Negahdari and the Sad Solids (a.k.a. kind of The Happy Hollows acoustic) played at Spaceland as part of a line-up that also featured Kárin Tatoyan, Learning Music, and Rocco DeLuca. While we have featured The Happy Hollows before on this blog, this show is different - besides being an all-acoustic show, the only "Happy Hollows" material covered was their song "Tell Me" (from their debut E.P. Bunnies & Bombs)Also, if the reader recalls, last year Death To Anders covered their song "Driver" at Radio Free Silverlake's "Undercovered" show last year.

This was definitely a fun and unique show that included a cover of Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold." The sad solids haven't seem to have done any shows like this for awhile, but perhaps they will do another one someday. In the meantime, enjoy this one.

On Monday night, Cobra Lilies played a show that was part of So Many Wizards' month-long residency at Silverlake Lounge. Cobra Lilies is a band that started out as a side project of The Monolators but in time has grown into ( according to their myspace ) "a Weird Folk singing and dancing supergroup formed from the ranks of some of Los Angeles’ most celebrated underground rock and folk bands" that includes members of Divisadero, Cat Hair Ensemble, Smells Like Flan, Ema And The Ghosts, and Shiloe. Last year, they released their debut EP In the Key Of Bicycle Bell (those songs were included in tonight's setlist) and are in the midst of currently recording new material.

Awhile back, The Happy Hollows played the final date of a month-long June 2008 residency held by Afternoons (who are now going by the moniker Shadow Shadow Shade)at Spaceland. We are no strangers to The Happy Hollows brand of "fast and irreverent noise-pop," having posted a show of theirs last year. Since then, they have been steadily becoming a presence on the national music scene - from releasing their first full-length album Spells to being featured in a Samsung mobile phone commercial.

The setlist for this show was a fairly long and varied one (for a residency slot) that sampled from their two EP's (Bunnies and Bombs and Imaginary) and their (at the time) future LP. It's an interesting look back at a band that has come so far, and will continue to go further.

Moonrats 3/29/10 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA.

Last month, Moonrats closed out with a bang their month-long Monday night residency at Spaceland (along with Warpaint) Moonrats is the brainchild of ex-Pretty Girls Make Graves founder/guitarist Nathan Thelen along with drummer Jason Echeverria and keyboardist Aska Matsumiya, and is described as "combine[ing]melancholy arrangements and dissonant textures with smoky atmospherics and an understated muscular delivery that drifts across the listener’s ears like a soft caress by bruised knuckles." This show was a great way to end their successful residency, and definitely worth a listen.

Warpaint 3/29/10 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA.

Last week, Warpaint helped close out Moonrats month-long Monday night residency at Spaceland. This show was a particularly important one for a couple of reasons - it was the last one they will have done in their hometown of Los Angeles for awhile (before touring part of the U.S/Europe,and introduced new material. We of course are no strangers to Warpaint, having posted a show of theirs at the same venue last August (which actually proved to be a very popular download)

Warpaint has been described as a shoegazey, "jammy, psychedelic dreamy riffage indie band," and this was well demonstrated at this show. They are due to release their debut LP next summer (an EP of theirs entitled Exquisite Corpse was made available back in October)Show itself was quite good, there may be some chatter in the background.

The French Semester 1/25/10 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA.

Last January, The French Semester played the final show of a month-long residency that they held at the The Echo. The French Semester are a band that creates and performs mainly in the shoegaze vein, a genre we are quite fond of. We were also fortunate to catch them a few times in the past - at last year's Eagle Rock Music Festival, and the first couple of Echo residency shows.

Setlist was a mixture of material from their last full-length album Good Friends Only I Could See and recently-released E.P. Forces Afield - with some newer songs such as "Test Pilot" and "Can A Hole Be" (tentative title) played.

Note: The title for the "new song" was taken off a picture of the setlist for the show - it sounds like it is most likely a temporary title.

About a week-and-a-half ago, Sara Lov opened for Vinicio Capossela at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. We of course are no strangers to the music of Sara Lov, having previously posted an older acoustic set of hers and another full band performance from late last year at The Hotel Cafe. Tonight's show was a good introduction for those unfamiliar with the Devics frontwoman's brand of self-described "simple and sad with a shot of scotch" music.

The setlist was mainly culled from her debut LP "Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming," along with an interpretation of Arcade Fire's "My Body Is A Cage" from last year's "The Young Eyes" EP. Also of note one was the inclusion of a brand-new cover of The Smith's "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," which Ms. Lov told the audience was from her recently announced cover song LP. Some light chatter may be heard at various points, but shouldn't be too bad.

Agent Ribbons 3/09/10 - Puka Bar, Long Beach, CA.

Last week, Agent Ribbons played at Puka Bar in Long Beach. This show was a different one for a couple of reasons: one, this was a stop on what was the final west coast tour before "singer/songwriter/guitarist Natalie Gordon is going to [start] calling Austin, Texas home." and two, the first Agent Ribbons show we've caught with semi-recent band member addition Naomi Cherie, who plays violin/tambourine (which, for this show, was replaced with maracas because the latter "was left in Austin") Of course, we are no strangers to Agent Ribbons, having previously posted shows of theirs, and even cover versions of one of their songs.

Setlist was fairly standard, with songs from their debut album On Time Travel and Romance, and songs that will presumably be on their upcoming release Chateau Crone. An added bonus was the debut of a new song, "I Was Born To Sing Sad Songs." Great show and sound all around.

HoneyHoney 2/26/10 - Casey's Irish Pub, Los Angeles, CA.

Last month, HoneyHoney opened for The Damselles & The TC4 on the final night of the latter's month-long Friday night residency. HoneyHoney are the Los Angeles-based duo Suzanne Santo and Ben Jaffe, who specialize in a sort of indie-Americana-folk style of music. Tonight's show was mostly an acoustic one (usually, they seem to play with a full band)

Opening with their most well-know song "Little Toy Gun," this show's setlist was comprised of a mix of new material and old, the the former culled from their debut LP, First Rodeo. The performance was a good one, especially for those of us who had never seen them before. Some crowd chatter and house music bleed (from another part of the restaurant) might be heard on the recording.

Last Friday, The Damselles & The TC4 played the last show of a month-long, headlining Friday night residency at Casey's Irish Pub in downtown Los Angeles. The Damselles are composed of members from local bands (including ones that have been featured on this very blog) such as The Monolators, The Voyeurs, Le Switch, and I Make This Sound. This group performs in the vein of "doo wop"/60's girl group style musicians, covering artists like The Crystals, The Shangri-Las, Martha & The Vandellas, The Shirelles, The Chiffons, The Caravelles, The Bobbettes, The Cookies, The Ikettes, Darlene Love, and Doris Troy.

This being the closing night, The Damelles & The TC4 played a longer-than-usual show (sort of by their own admission) with an audience-demanded two-song encore. Some crowd chatter in the background. A must-have for those a fan of the "doo-wop"/60's girl group sound.

Castledoor 2/22/10 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA.

On Monday night, Castledoor played what they announced the day before would "be the last show for [the band] as we know it" at Spaceland. The band had been in existence for five years, and had seemed to be on the rise with releases of 2 EP's (Follow The Dove and 'Til We Sink) and a full-length album last year (Shouting at Mountains)and having such infamous fans such as Joe Jonas singing praises of their work (the video of "Dumpster Diving") Tonight's show was the final chapter in a band that lead singer Nate Cole remarked on stage (a bit tongue-in-cheek?) was a "cross between Radiohead and the Jonas Brothers."

I first heard of Castledoor about three years ago, when they were playing on the same bill as previously-posted Ema and the Ghosts (also first time hearing about/seeing her) at Mr T's Bowl. At the time, they were playing live what LA-Underground coined "an absolutely brilliant cover of "Cry Me A River", and I was terribly intrigued (being a "secret" Justin Timberlake fan and all) to hear it. So, I saw them, but must admit I wasn't overly impressed, so I didn't go out of my way to see them again. (and now I'm sorry I didn't get them at their past Echo and Spaceland residencies)

However, seeing this show on Spaceland's upcoming calender, I decided maybe it was time to give them another shot. What I didn't know was that this would end up being the last time to do so. Playing to a packed and bursting at the seams house, the band emotionally took the stage and played a set that mostly sampled from all their releases (and, as Buzzband's Kevin Bronson tweeted "[lead singer]Nate ends 'Tambourine' with a few bars of [Sinead O'Connor's] 'Nothing Compares 2 U'") A bit melancholy, but poignant performance. It will be interesting to see what all these musicians will be up to in the future.

Foxtail's Brigade 2/13/10 - Echo Curio, Los Angeles, CA.

Last Saturday, Foxtail's Brigade played at Echo Curio as part of a line-up that included the previously-posted The Karabal Nightlife, Devotionals, and Mark Growden. We are no strangers to Laura Weinbach's music, having posted a show of hers from 2007 back in June. Since then, she has been performing under the moniker "Foxtail's Brigade" (whom we actually caught a partial show of theirs at the 2007 edition of the Eagle Rock Music Festival)

A few days before this show, Ms. Weinbach sent out an email stating that original Foxtail's member/violinist Sivan Sadeh was no longer part of the band, and that she had been "playing a lot on the street." (the latter of which was mentioned during the show) Setlist was mostly composed of newer material, including the previously performed "Sous le Ciel de Paris" and a timely version of "My Funny Valentine" (this being a pre-Valentine's Day show after all)

The Karabal Nightlife 2/13/10 - Echo Curio, Los Angeles, CA.

Last weekend, The Karabal Nightlife performed at the Echo Curio as part of a line-up that included Foxtail's Brigade and Devotionals. This night was a first for the band, who proclaimed that "this was their first acoustic show." We at Recording LA are no strangers to The Karabal Nightlife, having posted their Halloween covers set as T-Rex at The Echo last year.

As mentioned previously, this was The Karabal Nightlife's first acoustic show. The setlist seems to have been composed of newer material. Of interest was a cover of a(and perennial Recording LA favorites) Agent Ribbons song "Call Me Margaret." A good show and interesting new way of looking at their music.

The Year Zero 2/04/10 - Alex's Bar, Long Beach, CA.

Last Thursday, The Year Zero were on the roster of bands at Alex's Bar in Long Beach (and yes, this post is one of the first that finally ventured outside of Los Angeles - hey, it only took a little over a year) The Year Zero are primarily based in Long Beach, and seem to rarely plays shows outside of there, so taking a "field trip" of shorts is needed in order to see them. Luckily, with some free time on my hands and being in the right place at the right time, it worked out so I could go see them again.

I had first heard of The Year Zero some time ago while pursuing L.A.-Underground (a most excellent blog that highlights the Los Angeles music scene) A little while later I found and picked their LP Oceania, I Will Return, and listened and quite liked their brand of shoegazey, dream-pop. I eventually got to see them perform an acoustic show at {open} (a bookstore in Long Beach) in 2008 - however, it wasn't until now that I got another chance to see them again.

This performance, while on the short side (it appeared that they got started late, and had to cut a song from the setlist as a result) was a good one. Most of the songs played seem to be newer ("The Voice Of All" and "Counting Planes" are somewhat older) Sound is slightly on the muddy side and there were some chatty people in the crowd, but isn't too bad.

One Trick Pony 1/30/10 - The Hotel Cafe, Hollywood, CA.

Last Saturday, One Trick Pony played a show at The Hotel Cafe. (well, technically since it was after midnight it was on Sunday, but since they were on Saturday's bill, we'll just leave it at that) The first time I had heard of One Trick Pony was when one of their songs "Loose Talk" was covered by Death To Anders at Radio Free Silverlake's "Undercovered" show last year. The next month I only caught some of their set at the first of (with The Monolators) the Where Gallery "Exposure" shows, but was intrigued enough to want to catch them again, and the opportunity finally presented itself this past weekend.

However, I do have a bit to say on the venue that is The Hotel Cafe. I still like this place, I truly do, despite the way it's changed over the years. While it has still retained a few of it's laid-back qualities that defined it as more of a "coffeehouse"-type place in it's infancy, since becoming a more popular "scene" type of place, a lot has not changed for the better. (this was subtlety referenced by lead singer Randolph Pennyworth when he mentioned between songs "weathering that whole wave of douche outside") I suppose it can't helped, things change, especially when they become more popular. It still stings a little though.

Nevertheless,it was a fun show - lots new/newer songs (including some from the recently released album Full Of Life. Some crowd chatter present through to varying degrees (see text file for more info)

Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs 10/08/07 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA.

Awhile back, Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs played a show at The Echo. It was an odd sort of performance because they were booked on a residency night (if I remember correctly, Castledoor held it there that month) and seemingly got a shorter time slot because of it. Nevertheless, it was still a good show though.

I first heard of Holly Golightly back in 2003, when she released the LP Truly She Is None Other. A review of the album in Bust Magazine caught my eye which stated "with your sweet lil' ditties that make us want to redecorate our rooms into tiki hideaways, put on our best pastel '50s prom dresses, and float around our homes, dusting just for fun! Let's throw a fondue party in your honor and listen to your Candy Land voice peep through you vintage amp crackle, telling us to remind our loves, 'Don't forget I let you in and I'll let you out again.'" Needless to say, I was intrigued enough to go out and pick up the album, and fell in love with it; and have been listening to her music ever since.

I finally got to attend one of Holly Golightly's shows in 2004 (at Spaceland), which took place after she had released Slowly But Surely (which turned out to be the last full-length album of original material before she started pursuing music with "& The Brokeoffs) Since she unfortunately doesn't seem to tour the U.S. that much, this was the next show of hers that took place in L.A. - which was very different from her previous work, in that the "Brokeoffs" music was more geared towards alternative country. I must confess I prefer her older music, but the show wasn't bad in itself.

A few years ago, Autolux was the opener for a pair of infamous back-to-back Queens Of The Stone Age shows at The Wiltern. We here are no strangers to Autolux, having posted an headlining show of theirs at The Fonda a year ago. While my main motivation at the time of attending these shows was for QOTSA, I decided to record Autolux because I had seen them not that long ago opening for QOTSA and Nine Inch Nails, and were a bit familiar with them.

The setlist was pretty standard for an opening set - most of songs were culled from their debut (and only full-length) album Future Perfect. Only a couple of songs were not from the album, including "Reappearing" - which has been rumored to be on their long-delayed sophomore release Transit Transit

Letting Up Despite Great Faults 1/04/10 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA.

(Sorry for the lack of posts lately - holidays were a busy time for me.)

Last week, Letting Up Despite Great Faults played as part of the line-up for the first night of The French Semester's January residency at The Echo. Originally, I went to see latter band (who I had caught at last year's Eagle Rock Music Festival and was quite impressed); however, by the time they took the stage the audience's conversations were overtaking the music - therefore, I gave up a few songs in. (The Spires were also on this night's bill, and went on first, but their set will not be available due to technical issues)

Letting Up Despite Great Faults fall into the self-described "shoegaze" category as the headlining band, so everything worked out to a certain extent. They recently released their self-titled first full-length album, which made up the majority of this night's setlist. A cover of New Order's "Ceremony" rounded out the show. Recording came out pretty well; however, vocals may be a little low in the mix.

Sara Lov 12/08/09 - The Hotel Cafe, Hollywood, CA.

Apologies for the lack of posting recently - this has been a busy time of the year for us, and thus little free time = lack of going to shows and entries about them. However, a couple of weeks ago we were able to sneak out and see Sara Lov's last show of the year at The Hotel Cafe. We have posted about Sara Lov before, which was a short acoustic set from awhile back earlier this year.

This particular show was a full band one - and as noted by Ms. Lov during the show, with live musicians versus the phonograph with a recorded backing band on vinyl she used while on tour with Sea Wolf recently. Setlist consisted mostly of material from her solo debut full-length Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming, along with a cover of Air Supply's "All Out Of Love" (which she promised the audience would be a "dairy-free version")that was first posted on her myspace page. All in all, a nice little performance from Sara Lov.

The Chapin Sisters 3/07/09 - Synchronicity, Los Angeles, CA.

Earlier this year, The Chapin Sisters performed at Synchronicity Gallery, sharing the bill with the previously-posted Artichoke Heart Souffle. In a way, I sort of forgot about this show, probably because sometimes I can get lazy when it comes to setlist identification of artists I don't know much about. Listening back, it was a nice little acoustic performance, performed partially unamplified. (which means it may be on the quiet side sound-wise)

Imogen Heap 11/09/09 - The Music Box @ The Fonda, Hollywood, CA.

Last week, Imogen Heap played the first stop of her first U.S. tour (supporting the release of her new cd "Ellipse") at the The Music Box @ The Fonda in Hollywood. Originally, this show was supposed to be the second stop - the first was to be the night before in Santa Barbara; however, Ms. Heap was feeling under the weather and the show was postponed/canceled. We of course are no strangers to Imogen Heap - an older performance of hers was posted here last July.

Anyway, oddly enough I almost ended up not attending this show. The morning of the performance, Ms. Heap tweeted that "my voice is like gravel but I'm giving tonight's LA show a shot for those wondering to make the journey or not. So unfair! Sorry LA :(" Needless to say, I wasn't feeling very enthusiastic about going upon reading this news - I already wasn't in the mood to go due to work and other things. However, I didn't really wish to eat the price of the ticket, so I went down to the theatre, with the intention of perhaps trying to sell the ticket to someone who might be in need of one. As it turned, the only people looking to buy were the usual scalpers (who, as time goes on become more and more recognizable - seriously, you're not fooling anyone guys)

So, with no ticket buyers in sight, I ended up staying and attending the show. Which turned out to be a good thing, as Ms. Heap sounded much better than I thought she would, and ended up playing for almost two hours. Naturally, the setlist included most of songs from "Ellipse" (with the exception of "Earth" and "The Fire") and favorites from "Speak For Yourself" such as "Headlock", "Just For Now," and "Hide and Seek."

Like most Imogen Heap shows, sound levels are extreme. This recording tends toward the average sound - I ended up stuck in an less-than-desirable sounding area of the room, so this could have sounded better, but oh well. Crowd got loud between songs (this was the first and seemingly quickest show on the tour to sell out, so there were a lot of fans in the house)

Agent Ribbons 11/07/09 - American Legion Hall Post 206 Highland Park, Los Angeles, CA.

Earlier this month, Agent Ribbons performed at the American Legion Hall Post 206 in Highland Park as part of their recently-wrapped U.S. tour. We of course are no strangers to the Sacramento-based Agent Ribbons, having posted about them back in June. They were part of a night that was a well-curated line-up that included Los Angeles's Kissing Cousins, Birds & Batteries (San Francisco), and Rademacher (Fresno and Los Angeles) (and one that almost seems to span almost most of the state of California, heh)

Like back in June, Agent Ribbons played as a duo (they added a violinist awhile back, but she wasn't present for this show), and the setlist included many of the same old and newer songs played. What was different though was the addition of a "very brand new song" "I'm Alright," and a live version of "That's Not Edgar's Heart," which was from the 7-inch vinyl release "Agent Ribbons and the Star-Crossed Doppleganger". All in all, a very good show.

Awhile back, we posted an older in-store performance of Sondre Lerche's. Now, we are presenting another one; only this show is a little newer and was promoting different albums of his. Unlike the previous one however, this was a solo acoustic show at the infamously huge Amoeba Records in Hollywood.

At the time, Sondre Lerche had recently released two albums in close tandem with each other - Phantom Punch and the soundtrack to the film Dan In Real Life. . The setlist for this show of course reflects that - "Say It All" and "Tragic Mirror" from the former, and "To Be Surprised" and "My Hands Are Shaking" from the latter. ("Airport Taxi Reception" appeared on both albums) Throw in a couple of older tunes (from his first full-length album Faces Down) and you have a nice little list of songs.
