Spider 6/22/10 - Synchronicity, Los Angeles, CA.

(Updated 7/06/10)

Last week, Spider performed a short set of songs at the gallery/performance space Synchronicity. Spider is the musical moniker of Jane Herships, a singer-songwriter who is mainly based in NYC. Her music has been described as "hushed, personal folk songs with elements of shoegazing reminescent (sic) of musicians such as Nick Drake and M. Ward", with another writer adding that "it’s the way each phrase lingers in the air long enough for your ears to strain a teensy bit for the next chord or the next word to come. Languid and smooth underneath with a scratchy coating."

Tonight's list of songs was an evenly divided combination of old and newer material. In the latter half of the show, Ms. Herships was joined onstage with and accompanied by fellows bill-mates Devin, Gary and Ross. Interesting music, and worth checking out.

2.) Don't Be Afraid, I've Just Come to Say Goodbye, "The Ballad of Clementine Jones" MP3

  1. Thanks for recording and sharing this! =)

For those new to her music (I've been a fan since January 2006 when she was touring the West coast with Annie Bethancourt - who's on archive.org), her second album is on Bandcamp where you can listen to the full songs and buy them (in various lossy and lossless formats) at whatever price you wish to pay. Last.fm has previews of the songs on her first album, and many free full MP3 downloads from her second.

Also, I personally have a couple live recordings that I made of Spider in 2006 (solo) and one from 2007 (with a friend). I also have an audio webcast and a recording of a house concert that are both from October 2007. I have yet to share these online so contact me at my name at gmail.com if you're interested.

As far as tours go, she rarely updates her web site (the ones currently listed are from 2007), but she does update her Facebook page quite often about upcoming shows, and she's also fairly good about posting tour info on MySpace.
