The Pity Party 10/03/09 - 11th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival - Pep Boys - The Ship Stage, Los Angeles, CA.

In our third, and possibly final installment on our look at the 11th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival this month, we feature the Los Angeles-based duo The Pity Party. Some may recall that half of the The Pity Party had already been mentioned here, when drummer Heinsenflei played with The Raveonettes on their mini-tour back in January. Here, though, we look at a proper show of theirs.

Ironically enough, I first heard of The Pity Party (not unlike Leslie and the Badgers) at the 2007 version of the Eagle Rock Music Festival, when they played on the Emerging Stage. Admittedly, I didn't give them much of a chance(I only listened to them perform one song before wandering off) at the time; so, when I saw that they were on the line-up again this year, I was determined to give them another chance. And I'm glad I did, for this set was a marked improvement over the previous one. Web-In-Front gave a good description of them, saying "great rhythmic noise-pop with fractured guitar lines, darkly seductive lyrics and Hesenflei’s howled vocals and tribal drums."

A couple of notes - this performance took place near the tail end of the festival, so there is a bit of crowd chatter. Also, there was some buzzing/feedback on a couple of songs.

The Raveonettes 6/10/07 - Little Radio Warehouse, Los Angeles, CA.

Another one from the archives, and a companion to the previously posted show from The Fonda in January. However, this particular Raveonettes show is a little different - it was part of their mini "electric duo" west coast tour in the summer of 2007. This tour had a bit of a quasi-acoustic bent to it, as it mostly Sune and Sharon only playing. (except for a few songs that had Midnight Movie's Sandra Vu on drums - well, for the L.A. shows at least if I remember correctly)

Since this was also a club tour of sorts, it afforded an opportunity to see The Raveonettes in more intimate venues than they usually played (at this time, they did shows at Spaceland and The Echo as well, which I unfortunately missed) and the Little Radio Warehouse was no exception. Every year during the summer months, this venue does every Sunday something called "Summercamp," which is late morning to early evening party that has (indoors) live music and (outdoors) a pool, waterside, DJ's, canopys, lawn chairs, food, and free-flowing alchohol.

This show features a couple of interesting covers - "Everyday" (Buddy Holly) and "100%" (Sonic Youth) The former was the perfect fit with The Raveonettes signature, fuzzed out sound. Also showcased was a preview of several tunes from their last album "Lust Lust Lust," which had yet to be released at the time.

Recording came out well, even though I was worried that the venue was on the boomy side. Their was some more background chatter than I like, but that's the way these things go.

The Raveonettes 1/24/09 - The Music Box @ The Fonda, Hollywood, CA.

I first heard of The Raveonettes back in 2002 or '03 when I pick up their "Whip It On" EP on a whim. I remember liking it well enough; however, I suppose it wasn't enough to buy the released-shorty-thereafter full-length "Chain Gang Of Love" (that, plus I had heard someone describe it as "being too commerical" or something) I didn't really listen to them again until a few years later when (again, on a whim) I got the "50's and 60's"- influenced "Pretty In Black."

With that, I finally got to see them live in 2007 at one of the Little Radio Summercamp shows, which precluded the release of their last full-length "Lust Lust Lust." I saw them again last year also at the very hot (literally) Make Music Festival in Pasadena - although briefly, because I had a previous engagement later that evening. Those particular shows from that period are notable because Sharin Foo's sister Louise was filling in for her because Sharin was pregnant at the time. (I didn't get to record this particular show, but a source is floating around online) Also last year, they also released 4 ep's ("Remixed," "Beauty Dies," "Sometimes They Drop By," and a Christmas-themed one)

So, the Fonda show. This was the last of a mini-east and west coast tour, and the last before recording their next album. Show feature Jennifer (from Zaza and ex-The Warlocks) on bass, and Heinsenflei on drums (who is best known from the Los Angeles-based band The Pity Party). Good show, but pretty short (just under an hour), which seems like it was norm for the tour. Like the previously-posted Autolux show from the same venue, I think it sounds pretty good, though I think The Fonda should maybe look into upgrading their sound system.
