Death to Anders 3/03/12 - Lot 1 Cafe, Los Angeles, CA.

(Image: Death to Anders Facebook)

Last Saturday, Death to Anders played an "encore" performance of the Pixies' infamous album Surfer Rosa in it's entirety at Lot 1 Cafe in Los Angeles. Originally, the band performed the album on the final night of their Friday residency at Casey's Irish Pub - however, due to overwhelming demand, they were asked to do it again. It's been awhile since we featured Death to Anders (at last June's "Tribute to The Movies" and the first "Undercovered" show), and perhaps it seems a little ironic that yet again we are featuring another set of theirs that is mostly covers. (We'll get to a regular show one day, we promise)

Popular opinion seems to say that Surfer Rosa was one of the Pixies' most well-known releases, which contains some of the band's most recognizable tracks ("Bone Machine," "Gigantic," and "Where Is My Mind?") Death to Ander's renditions captured the spirit and mood of the Pixies perfectly, and is worth a listen from new and old fans alike. Setlist below:

"greeting"
Bone Machine
Break My Body
Something Against You
Broken Face
Gigantic
River Euphrates
Where Is My Mind?
Cactus
Tony's Theme
Oh My Golly!
Vamos
I'm Amazed
Brick Is Red
"crowd & banter"
Shadowlane (Death to Anders original song)

Tribute to The Movies (Various Artists) 6/25/11 - The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA.

(Flyer from KogaFoto)

A few weeks ago (yes, I know, it's been awhile since the last post here - blame it on a combination of being sick/procrastination) "Tribute to The Movies" took place at The Satellite in Los Angeles. Several bands and artists came together to pay tribute to the now-defunct Los Angeles-based band The Movies. While our experiences with The Movies have been limited (we saw frontman Timothy James do a solo set over two years ago) they have been described as "legendary in Los Angeles" and "entirely idealized—purported to be larger than life." Regardless, it was a very emotional evening.

Due to the, er, boisterous nature of this event, this was a challenging show to record. Each band/artist was recorded and mastered separately (with fade ins and outs applied between each "set") - thus, sound levels will vary. The beginning of "Truth Knocking" was cut due to one of the night's performers who shall remain nameless whispering in my left ear. Approximately 14 seconds of "Get Your Macho Out" was cut due an audience member telling me, and I quote "The majority of those musicians on stage are completely unprofessional - why aren't you up there with them?" (yes, this really happened)

George Glass 5/30/10 - All-Star Lanes, Los Angeles, CA.

Awhile back, George Glass played as part of the line-up for "Undercovered II," (more info about the show here) which featured Seasons, Rademacher, The Hectors, and One Trick Pony at All-Star Lanes. George Glass is a relatively new band, which boasts former members of other local band Death To Anders (who were part of Undercovered's debut night last year). Currently a three piece featuring Nick Celigo on vocals/guitar, Peter DiBiasio on bass, and Nathan Kondor on drums, their live shows have been described as having "fabulous vocals and guitar, real, true bass work, and terrific drumming all tied together so well" and "erupting on into the night as they deliver the goods to us once again song after song."

This set of covers was a broad one, paying note to such local luminaries (and bill-mates that night) Rademacher ("Courtesy Call") and One Trick Pony ("Loose Talk" - which was also covered by Death To Anders last year) An interesting selection was a song by Arthur Lee's band "Love," along with a cover of local's The Primos "Cookbook." However, the most impressive feat of the evening was a melody of songs by local bands (the only one I recognized was a snippet of The Happy Hollows "DeLorean"), which was a Nick solo effort.

Update: Thanks to the band for filling in the blanks on the setlist!

Sarah Negahdari and the Sad Solids 8.08.08 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA.

( Photo: Jeff Koga )

From the archives.

Awhile back, Sarah Negahdari and the Sad Solids (a.k.a. kind of The Happy Hollows acoustic) played at Spaceland as part of a line-up that also featured Kárin Tatoyan, Learning Music, and Rocco DeLuca. While we have featured The Happy Hollows before on this blog, this show is different - besides being an all-acoustic show, the only "Happy Hollows" material covered was their song "Tell Me" (from their debut E.P. Bunnies & Bombs)Also, if the reader recalls, last year Death To Anders covered their song "Driver" at Radio Free Silverlake's "Undercovered" show last year.

This was definitely a fun and unique show that included a cover of Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold." The sad solids haven't seem to have done any shows like this for awhile, but perhaps they will do another one someday. In the meantime, enjoy this one.

Marvelous Toy, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (w/Angele Correa), Radars To The Sky, Death To Anders 2/15/09 - All-Star Lanes, Los Angeles,CA.

(apologies on the lateness of this post - it's been a busy week, and this took longer to put together than I thought it would)

This post-Valentine's Day, Radio Free Silverlake and The Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club presented "Undercovered: Great L.A. Bands Celebrating Great L.A. Bands." It was a great night of 4 bands from the L.A. indie scene covering and paying homage to bands from the same area.

And what a great night it was. Marvelous Toy covered The Henry Clay People. The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra covered The Monolators. Radars To The Sky covered Rilo Kiley. Death To Anders covered The Happy Hollows. The audience wore hats on their feet and hamburgers ate people. (okay, maybe the last part didn't happen - well, that I know of anyway)

Previously, I had only seen a couple of Death To Anders songs live and Angela Correa twice. As someone who's still learning about a lot of locally-based musicians, I confess I wasn't familar with alot of what was being covered. However, what I heard was good, and look forward to seeing any of these people perform in the future.

The venue itself was interesting - this show took place in the bar of a bowling alley (a teeny one too, around 22 lanes). I was kind of afraid of the surrounding environment because, let's face it, bars are usually super-noisy. However, these came out really well considering.

Bedroom Walls 8/04/07 - Spaceland, Los Angeles, CA. (Part Three)

(Final post in a series of three.)

In this last post, we take a look at this Spaceland show, which coincidentally happened to be one of Bedroom Walls' last in this incarnation. (edited to add: maybe?) It was part of a good Saturday night line-up with Radars To The Sky, Rademacher, and Death To Anders (and if anyone asks, no I didn't record them that night - though, this will hopefully change in the future)

This was a nice little set that turned out pretty well. One noteable feature is a seemingly rare acoustic duet between Adam and Melissa on "In Anticipation Of Your Suicide" - definitely worth the download.

The Happy Hollows 11/06/08 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA.

I first heard of the L.A.-based The Happy Hollows sometime last year when someone compared them to the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. Being a somewhat longtime fan of the YYY's, I had to check these guys out, which I eventually did last summer. Admittedly though, The Happy Hollows was an another band that took awhile to "grow" on me, but they have, which is good (lol) They also sometimes play under an acoustic persona, Sarah Negahdari and the Sad Solids, which is equally as great.

This show here was a special double whammy - it was the release party for their latest release of the "Imaginary" EP, and a celebration of Barack Obama's presidential election victory (yay!)

This show also featured Nick Ceglio (of "Death To Anders") on guitar on some songs.
