Walking Sleep 10/02/10 - 12th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, Los Angeles, CA.

Last month, Walking Sleep played at this year's 12th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival (along with previously-posted Seasons, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Radars To The Sky, and The Submarines)We have had the pleasure of seeing Walking Sleep perform before under their old moniker The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra - however, these were all-cover sets (at last year's Undercovered extravaganza, and performing as "Fleetwood Mac" last Halloween at The Echo) This time, though, we got a short but sweet look at them playing their own original material. (their song "Don't Be Fooled" was recently featured on Grey's Anatomy as well)

As noted, Walking Sleep was originally known as The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, and they are described as "combined male and female vocal harmonies, classic rhythms, and curiously dark lyrics...drawing influence across genres and decades, their songs include echoes of the melancholy psychedelic pop of The Zombies, the uptempo stomp of classic Motown, and the moody melodicism of Fleetwood Mac, but placed in a modern context, akin to bands like Belle & Sebastian and The Shins." This set of songs lived up to that, which was mainly culled from their recent debut LP release Measures, along with a newer one. A fun little show worth downloading.

The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra 10/27/09 - The Echo, Los Angeles, CA. (mostly Fleetwood Mac cover set)

Last week, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra performed a cover set of songs by Fleetwood Mac at The Echo, as part of a night featuring four different Los Angeles-based bands performing as different classic rock bands. In contrast, earlier this year we posted a set of cover songs of other bands of L.A. performed by this band (as part of Radio Free Silverlake's "Undercovered" night) Being somewhat familiar with most of Fleetwood Mac's greatest hits, I was curious to see how this would sound.

Their set did not disappoint - if anything, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra's versions of these songs sounded better than the originals. Highlights were "Say You Love Me," "Rhiannon," and "Little Lies." The only song I wasn't familiar with was "Tusk," which was performed with a mini marching band/brass section.

Vocals were a little low in the mix, but don't let that stop you from downloading this show.

Avi Buffalo 3/29/09 - University of Southern California (KSCR Music Fest), Los Angeles, CA.

Admittedly, I didn't really know that much about Avi Buffalo before I saw them at this mini-music festival recently. The name was familiar, and I remembered reading someplace and being surprised to hear that all/most (?) of the band is still in high school (bet that makes for some interesting conflicts playing at most of 21+ clubs in town, heh)

Oddly enough, I first heard one of Avi Buffalo's songs as a cover, when The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra performed "Where's Your Dirty Mind?" as a part of Radio Free Silverlake's "Undercovered" night (which, of course, can be found here)It was interesting to find out that this song was one of Avi Buffalo's, and I made a mental note to try and catch one of their shows one day.

Coincidentally, KSCR Fest happened to fall on the same day I was supposed to record another show (which fell through) I must confess that I felt a bit odd walking on the campus of USC, coming from a Bruin family (the rivalry remains strong) It was a nice little event though, and the Founder's Park was a great setting (if they have more shows there I may consider going back.

This performance is just a very short but sweet acoustic one (just Avi and Rebecca) that showcases some of their material. Sound levels are somewhat extreme though - that's just the way the show unfolded.

Marvelous Toy, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (w/Angele Correa), Radars To The Sky, Death To Anders 2/15/09 - All-Star Lanes, Los Angeles,CA.

(apologies on the lateness of this post - it's been a busy week, and this took longer to put together than I thought it would)

This post-Valentine's Day, Radio Free Silverlake and The Eagle Rock Bowling and Drinking Club presented "Undercovered: Great L.A. Bands Celebrating Great L.A. Bands." It was a great night of 4 bands from the L.A. indie scene covering and paying homage to bands from the same area.

And what a great night it was. Marvelous Toy covered The Henry Clay People. The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra covered The Monolators. Radars To The Sky covered Rilo Kiley. Death To Anders covered The Happy Hollows. The audience wore hats on their feet and hamburgers ate people. (okay, maybe the last part didn't happen - well, that I know of anyway)

Previously, I had only seen a couple of Death To Anders songs live and Angela Correa twice. As someone who's still learning about a lot of locally-based musicians, I confess I wasn't familar with alot of what was being covered. However, what I heard was good, and look forward to seeing any of these people perform in the future.

The venue itself was interesting - this show took place in the bar of a bowling alley (a teeny one too, around 22 lanes). I was kind of afraid of the surrounding environment because, let's face it, bars are usually super-noisy. However, these came out really well considering.
